Verses for Consideration: Genesis 1:26-28
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

How people feel about themselves is often referred to as self-esteem. After teaching generations that we evolved from primordial slime, is it any wonder that many lack self-esteem?
God’s Word, the Bible, teaches about a loving God, who created us.
God gave us special care and attention. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth,and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
What a wonderful thing it is to know you were made in God’s image and did not develop by chance! King David expressed his joy in this fact when he said, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14).
Being made in God’s image does not mean walking upright rather than on all fours. Since God is a spirit, he does not have a physical body. Rather, it means that Adam and Ever were created perfect and holy.
God showed how much he cares for his creation by sending us a Savior. We see God’s vast intellect in Jesus’ parables. When we look at Jesus, we see God’s image in a perfect way. And we behold the saving will of God when Jesus submitted to crucifixion in order to rescue us from our sins.
We have sinned and lost God’s image. We see nothing in us that can lead to self-esteem. We see only sin and rebellion against God. Yet when we consider how God created us and when we think of his salvation in Christ and the blessings of being restored in his image, we know we have so much to be thankful for and to live for.
Someday, when God creates the new heaven and the new earth, we will understand fully what God intended for us when he created us. Until then, we live by faithand look forward to that day.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for creating us in your image. We especially thank you for restoring your image in us through the gospel of your salvation. Amen.
